Geokosmos to contribute to International Megaproject

09.10.2009

Geokosmos, 100% Russian company, is proud to announce that it has become the first company in CIS and Russia to perform aerial surveying for an overseas Customer at the territory of the Russian Federation. Despite the fact that the project was carried out in the homeland it received international recognition. The project stipulates the development of the Shtokman gas and condensate field, one of the world's largest natural gas fields which is located in the central part of Russian sector of the Barents Sea shelf, about 600 kilometres (370 mi) north of Kola Peninsula. In the framework of the project an LNG plan will be constructed. According to Gazprom the Shtokman gas and condensate field “…will become a resource base for Russian pipeline gas as well as liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports to the Atlantic Basin markets… Relatively small distances between the field and end users (the US Eastern Coast, Canada, Mexico) will make Russian LNG competitive.”

The Customer of the project is international company Shtokman Development AG. Sergey Melnikov, President of Geokosmos Group of Companies, commented: “This is for the first time when a Russian surveying and mapping company managed to obtain necessary authorization licenses on providing an overseas Customer with the geoinformation data acquired at the Russian territory. We are very proud to be this first company and win the tender on topographic survey to contribute to the international megaproject.”

Geokosmos’s specialists surveyed 160 sq.km using an up-to-date LiDAR system ALTM Gemini under challenging conditions caused by severe environmental conditions (temperatures below freezing points) and compound terrain. The point density was defined with 4 points per 1 sq.m, planimetric and height accuracy – 15 cm. The aerial survey was performed at the altitude of 500 m ensure the required resolution of aerial imagery – 10 cm GSD for vertical images and 7 cm GSD for oblique images. The project deliverables will include Digital Terrain Model, digital vector topographic maps 1:10000, oblique imagery and high resolution orthophoto maps.
