Geokosmos to produce three-dimensional model for the urban areas of the Republic of Lithuania

07.10.2005

Geokosmos, one of the leading companies in the Russian and CIS topographic and geodetic survey market, has been awarded a contract to form a referential database of the urban territories of Lithuania. The tender was announced by the National Land Service under the Ministry of Agriculture of Lithuania. Except Geokosmos a number of well-known foreign companies, such as FM-Karto (Norway), Terra Imaging (Holland) participated in the tender. Geokosmos offered the most attractive proposal of the work and won the tender with a Lithuanian Company InfoEra which will act as a partner of Geokosmos in the project initiated by the National Land Service.

Within the framework of the project Geokosmos will create 3-D model of ten Lithuanian cities (Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipeda, Siauliai, Panevezys, Alytus, Mariajampole, Telsiai, Taurage, Utena), the total area is 2400 sq km. While performing the project, Geokosmos experts will employ the Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR), or Aerial Laser Survey technology which will allow to collect high-accurate data. The LIDAR equipment will be installed in a plane and linked with a GPS station mapped with geodetic control points.

The Aerial Laser Survey technology employed by Geokosmos has several unique features. First and foremost, the technology ensures the most accurate and full image of the terrain and structural components of process facilities at any season of the year. It also helps to identify the precise location and form of any complicated engineering objects, normally of any origin, such as loading platforms, bridges or buildings. Apart from that the Aerial Laser Survey technology allows to fully exclude terrestrial geodetic works from the process cycle since aerial survey does not require field compilation survey. It will save time and will be cost-effective.

Commenting on the project Geokosmos President Sergey Melnikov stated: “The award of the tender is a recognition of a leading position of Geokosmos in this market segment and will form the underlying basis for all future work to be carried out by the company. The commitments between the National Land Service under the Ministry of Agriculture of Lithuania and Geokosmos underline a high quality service which the company can provide for the Republic as a whole”.
