Geokosmos and Microsoft Vexcel – bold ideas are becoming our reality

An international scale event in the field of Geoinformatics was held on September 12, 2008, Moscow. The leaders of the three leading companies, Vexcel Imaging / a Microsoft Company, Geokosmos and Geolidar, presented to the community and mass media the concept and strategy of Microsoft Virtual Earth Project. Microsoft Virtual Earth is the most ambitious Geoinformatics project in the history of mankind. It is a strong and the most prominent competitor to Google Maps Project; just within a short period of time the methods of data capturing, analysis and visualization have been drastically changed. The capabilities of the Virtual Earth platform are being steadily improved and enhanced. It is expected that 3 000 cities all around the world will be covered by Microsoft Virtual Earth and photorealistic 3D models will be created; 80% of the world population will be involved into the project - this is far incomplete list of Microsoft Virtual Earth prospects for the next 5 years. Data processing is fully automated and it is the most significant feature of the Virtual Earth. 3D visualization is based on aerial imagery - high resolution vertical images along with oblique ones to enhance texture quality and additional feature extraction. Geokosmos is the only company in Russia to possess a unique combined technology of aerial survey with simultaneous use of laser scanner (LiDAR), large-format digital camera and two or four oblique medium format digital cameras. It was one of the first companies in Russia, which has been developing and putting into practice innovative technologies and now it is the only participant of Microsoft Visual Earth Project in Russia.
