The 5th Annual International Conference and Exposition “Laser Scanning and Digital Aerial Photography. Today and Tomorrow” was successfully held in Moscow, 08-09 December in the Novotel Moscow Centre.

Organizer: Society of Contribution to Development of Photogrammetry & Remote Sensing (RSPRS).

Co-organizers: The Federal Service of Geodesy and Cartography of Russia, the Federal Agency of Real Estate Cadastre of Russia, International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS), the International Cartographic Association (ICA), Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography (MIIGAiK), the Siberian State Geodetic Academy (SGGA).

The main aim of the Conference, sharing the experience of employing up-to-date digital aerial photography and airborne laser scanning technologies and demonstrating software products for post - processing of collected data, was achieved. More than 80 companies from 17 countries took part in the Conference. Optech Inc. (Canada), Intergraph (Germany), IGI mbH (Germany), Applanix Corporation (Canada), Rollei, Trimble Navigation (USA), TopoSys GmbH (Germany), Leica Geosystems (Switzerland) were among the participating companies (see the details). Mr. Borodko, Head of the Federal Service of Geodesy and Cartography of Russia, Dr. Savinykh, MIIGAiK Rector, President of the Association of Russian Universities, Member of International Academy of Astronautics, Milan Conecny, President of the International Cartographic Association, and Mr. Miller, GIS Association President, made welcome speech.

The reports delivered by the Conference participants were of great interest to the audience which primarily consisted of the potential end-users and Geoinformatics Industry professionals. It should be emphasized that the Conference program included the reports of those specialists who represented the leading Russian and overseas companies-key players on the digital geodetic market. In the framework of the Conference the International Exposition was held. Optech Inc.(Canada), GeoLIDAR, Geopolygon, DIMAC SYSTEMS, PRIN, G.F.K. Company Ltd., Jena Instrument presented the latest innovations and up-to-date airborne and terrestrial laser scanners produced by Optech Inc. (Canada), Trimble Navigation (USA), Leica Geosystems (Switzerland), and Riegl LMS (Austria). The organizers made a lot of surprises to those who were present at the Conference. The most pleasant surprise which came all of sudden was the presentation of a new book “Laser Survey of Land and Forest” by I. M. Danilin, a leading scientific researcher representing the Forestry Institute of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, E. M. Medvedev, General Director of GeoLIDAR Company, and S. R. Melnikov, Geokosmos Company President. The new book covers physical principals of laser surveying and its advantages. The book is recommended by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation as a student’s textbook. All participants of the 5th International Conference the new book as a present.
