Geokosmos to complete its first lidar surveying project in Pacific Asia region

23.08.2007

Geokosmos successfully carried out LiDAR surveying in Vietnam. Thus, Russia-based company has considerably extended the geography of its projects to a new region – Asia Pacific. The project was aimed at acquiring accurate, up-to-date geospatial data on Vietnamese southern regions.

Geokosmos specialists surveyed the Mekong Delta using up-to-date LiDAR system – ALTM 3100 (Optech Inc.,Canada) with the integrated inertial measurement unit (IMU), manufactured by SAGEM, France. The total territory of airborne survey comprised 2 100 square km. Airborne laser scanning was conducted at the height of 1500 m with high density of laser points – 2 points per 1 sq.m. Geokosmos provided the Customer with preprocessed data. For interpretation and further processing of the data the Vietnamese specialists received from Geokosmos the latest in-house developed software product called Geokosmos 3D Modeler.

The Mekong Delta is one the most important agricultural regions in the country. The area is home to large numbers of rice cultivation fields, fruit gardens, hevea plantations, prawn farms, and the surrounding farmlands are extremely fertile. Population density in the Mekong Delta is one of the highest ones not only in the country itself but in the world. Thirty million people are involved into the development of agricultural sector in the Mekong Delta. In this connection seasonal flooding is becoming a really burning issue for Vietnam. On the one hand, seasonal floods bring with them a lot of benefits, enriching the soil and renewing its fertility; on the other hand, floods can cause devastating damage, threatening human life and destroying property. In this respect attempts to forecast and monitor seasonal floods can be and should be made.

The data provided by Geokosmos will serve as an effective tool for flood and natural resources monitoring and will help effectively solve a lot of vital tasks. Based on the acquired data Vietnamese specialists will be able to create a digital terrain model of the Mekong Delta. Having in mind the annual precipitation index and using DTM Vietnamese scientists will be able to model river flood dynamics and thus, forecast flood consequences.
