Geokosmos Company has announced its acquisition of the UltraCAM-D digital aerial topographic camera, a Vexcel Imaging (Austria) product. The purchase is unique due to the fact, that the Ultra-CAM-D is the pioneer full-scale digital aerial camera with the high resolution rate (86,25 mega pixel) which will be used within the territory of the former Soviet Union states.Geokosmos plans a joint use of the UltraCAM-D digital aerial camera and aircraft-installed ALTM LIDARs which will allow to create detailed texturing 3-D DTM (Digital Terrain Model) and DSM (Digital Surface Model), thus helping to achieve high quality in orthorectifying the digital images. The UltraCAN-D aerial camera and ALTM LIDARs usage area is vast and includes large-scale topographic mapping, electric power lines survey, involvement in forestry and cadastre works, as well as in other topographic and geodetic and engineering survey.
There were negotiations and long-term tests held prior to the acquisition. For instance, June 2004 saw UltraCAM-D digital aerial camera flight testing in Graze, under Geokosmos experts’ supervision. The further expertise of the photographic and photogrammetric aerial survey data quality was carried out at the Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography, Department of Pphotogrammetry, under the supervision of Professor A. Mikhailov and Doctor of Science (Engineering) E.Medvedev, Geokosmos representative. In his comment to the deal with Vexcel Imaging, Sergei Melnikov, Geokosmos President observed: UltraCAN-D aerial camera acquisition is a next logical milestone in Geokosmos history and illustrates Geokosmos highest level of technical capacity on the Russian market. And as a whole its state-of-art equipment is the best in Europe. UltraCAM-D boasts higher accuracy, better color transfer, accuracy, and more detailed images. But what is most important, it is that UltraCAM-D aerial camera productivity will grow 3 fold to compare it with the medium-resolution aerial cameras, and 10 fold to compare with the similar aerial cameras. Thanks to the aerial photo camera and ALTM LIDAR employment in common, we will have new opportunities to create texturing DSMs (Digital Surface Models), which will allow to create high quality topographic maps and plans, as well as orthophotoplans in the shortest time. No other company on the Russian market is able to provide such services…”
